DAC2017 Regional Qualifiers draw to a close.
12 teams will be fighting over the lion’s share of the $500,000 (~Php25,000,000) prize pool at the tail end of next month in Shanghai, China. Four of these teams received Direct Invites: Evil Geniuses, Wings Gaming, OG and Newbee. Another four came from the Chinese Qualifiers: Invictus Gaming, Team VG.J, LGD.Forever Young and iG Vitality. And the rest came from the four regional qualifiers in the Americas, Europe, CIS and SEA regions.
Coming on top of the American Qualifiers is Team NP, who had beaten Digital Chaos 2-0 clean. It’s a story of vengeance as it was DC who had sent Team NP to the lower bracket of the Playoff Tree of the Qualifiers. It was a clean path to victory for NP in the Loser’s Bracket, beating both Team Onyx and compLexity Gaming 2-0 clean, eliminating both American teams out of the tournament.
Meanwhile, Team Faceless continues to dominate the SEA region, defeating regional rivals TnC Pro Team in the Loser’s Bracket Finals to face WarriorsGaming.Unity in the Playoffs’ Grand Finals. Interestingly, WG.U had sent both Faceless and TnC in the lower bracket, but yet WG.U fell to the might of Faceless 2-0 in the Grand Finals. Faceless continues to impress, cementing their place as the top SEA team for the moment.
The European Qualifier on the other hand may have been the most predictable regional qualifier for the DAC 2017. Team Liquid emerged victorious, rampaging through the winners’ bracket and defeating B)ears twice: first in the Winner’s Finals, and then in the Grand Finals. At least this time, it goes to show how much MMR could take your team.
On to the most unpredictable region comes the CIS Qualifier, which we saw fighting over the spot in which Virtus.pro could have easily claimed but didn’t – as VP backed down from their matches due to internet connectivity issues. Team Empire and Effect ended up in the Grand Finals, with Empire beating Effect a second time in that playoffs, claiming their rightful spot in the Main Event.
The LAN tournament will run from March 28 up until April 4, and will be organized by Perfect World and Valve. The Group Stage of the tournament will take up the first three days of the schedule, where we’ll see the twelve teams divided into two groups, fighting each other in Bo2 series Round-Robin. The top two teams of each bracket gets a sweet spot in the Upper Bracket of the Main Event, while the rest will have to fight a harder route to victory through the Lower Bracket.
The DAC2017 Main Event Format
The Main Event Tournament will be fought in a double elimination Bo3 format, with the Grand Finals being a Bo5 series.
